When this question is posed, the answer I give isn’t very popular. That answer? Now!
Where I’m heading here is that natural food (flowers), over what’s in your backyard feeder, is better for the hummingbird. Let’s face it, we all love watching this tiny creature up close while it’s at the feeder, but planting flowers that will attract them is a much better idea. Work with nature! Provide a natural food source that won’t harm them (read: don’t use pesticides) and you can enjoy these beauties as much or more!
Some of the hummingbirds’ favorites are the Morning Glory, Geranium, Zinnia, or Gladiolus. In early spring the Columbine is popular with them. These flowers are fragrant and colorful.
I want to mention that those feeders can also spread fungal infections like Candida or Aspergillosis or even Salmonella. This occurs if they become dirty, contaminated or if your nectar has gone bad. Also, ants can get in the feeder. Don’t even get me started on how the wasps fight with me while I try to change out the nectar!
So, each season, feed them in this new way by planting for them!
