How Did the Blanketflower Get Its Name

When I was younger, I marveled at the Blanketflower! It looked just like a daisy to me, but with different coloring. I used to call it the red daisy because of its red and yellow petals and crimson red center (more red on it than yellow to me). As I got older, I learned its unique name and then started to wonder where that name came from.

There are a few different ideas as to where the name originated. One idea is from people who feel that it resembles the brightly patterned blankets of similar coloring, first made by Native Americans long ago. Other’s think this flower blanketed the grave of an early Native American weaver, while some feel it’s just a wild flower that blankets large areas once planted.

I don’t know who is correct. I just know I still love this plant! It’s easy to grow from seed, loves the full sun and if watered properly, will bloom for quite some time.
